Insurance in blackjack is considered a side bet and may be made at 50% the amount of your actual bet. The side bet may only be made when the dealer's open card is an ace. The side bet is on the dealer having blackjack; if you win your hand you win your actual bet, and if the dealer wins his hand you will win the side bet! The side bet is paid 2:1.
